5 Emotions I’ve Gone Through Since Being Off Social Media.

Since getting off social media at the beginning of the year 2021, these are the roller-coaster of emotions I’ve experienced.

Determination

Whether it’s working out, reading more, a diet, or whatever the case may be, when you set your mind to accomplish a task you know will better your life there’s a determination that drives you. The kind of determination that makes you want to push yourself forward but also makes you really uncomfortable. Ya know, because when was the last time you really stuck to your goal you started? Which leads me to the next emotion…

Hesitation

I found myself asking, “is this really going to make a difference in my life?” Why would a girl in her twenties get off social media anyhow? Would it make my social life more difficult or possibly obsolete? I had question after question within my first two weeks of going cold turkey. Questions that boiled down to wondering if this was worth it.

Irritation

Here I was minding my own business and getting through the withdrawal when Facebook decides to be all pushy and creepy by sending me a text message. Something they’ve never done before, mind you. But now that I no longer had the app from my phone and hadn’t been active on it, they figured they would text me to try to get my attention back on social media.

Contentment

At first I was overwhelmed with this sudden amount of free time, but slowly I began to feel this peaceful contentment in that. I was no longer spending time looking at other peoples highlight reels and comparing their extravagant lives to my simple one. I wasn’t bombarded by ads or some blogger telling me I needed new clothes. I am growing to be content with who I am and what I have in life. The kind of contentment that leaves you feeling pure joy and an overall sense of happiness.

Curiousity

Throughout the entire experience I have experienced a lot of curiosity. At the end of the year is this something I’ll go back to? What will this challenge teach me? Is social media an important aspect of life in society? Will social media have a direct impact on my career choice? What does the rest of the year look like? Basically every question you are thinking, I am thinking as well. It’s a process that I’ve never really experienced.

So whether or not this is something you’re going through or not, hopefully you can learn from my experience.

If this is a challenge you’ve experienced, I’d be interested to know in your thoughts on it as well. Did you go back to social media or did you stay away? Did it make an impact on your life?
